The finals of the internal club competitions at Bovey Tracey Bowling Club took place over the weekend. They were blessed with a fine day on Saturday which featured a high class men's championship match which was won by Phil Joy by 21 shots to 17 against Roger Bailey who held the upper hand early on but was eventually pegged back by Phil who won the competition for the third season in a row.
The ladies were less fortunate with the weather on Sunday for their championship final which was played in mixed conditions with Heidi Call winning by 21 shots to 15 against mum Sue Johnson to take her second final of the weekend, adding to her previous day's handicap victory.
In the men's two wood final, Chris Shorland was a deserving winner, proving too strong on the day for Kenny Breame and took the win by 17 shots to 4. The ladies' two woods was a repeat of their championship final with the reverse result, Sue Johnson triumphing over daughter Heidi Call by 14 shots to 10.
The men's handicap involved Alastair Franklin, playing the first of three finals over the weekend, against Roger Bailey, playing his first of two. After Alastair's four-shot advantage was cancelled out by Roger on the first end, the match was evenly balanced until the latter stages with Roger running out the winner by 21 shots to 13. Heidi Call had to concede a four-shot advantage to Sarah Breame in the ladies' handicap but slowly pulled ahead after halfway to win by 19 shots to 13.
The men's drawn pairs was won by Tyler Smith and Les Hignett who were on top throughout their match against Chris Young and Kenny Breame to run out 27 shots to 15 winners. Especially well done to Tyler who only started playing bowls this season.
In the mixed drawn pairs, Les Hignett and Heidi Call proved too strong a pairing for Jule Chew and Alastair Franklin, winning by 24 shots to 13 in a match played in the rain throughout.
In the Ley Cup, Alastair Franklin finally triumphed at the third attempt, winning by two sets to one against Tyler Smith in a closely-contested match.
