This week's report includes results from a variety of competitions, both teams and individuals, so some of the detail has been kept intentionally brief.
In the Men's Over 55s X Division an impressive win away at Abbrook Park resulted in Bovey gaining six league points to Abbrook's two, a result which raises them to second place in the division. A Walding, N Fletcher, P Joy 15-16; D Anderson, K Lockett, C Shorland 21-15. In the Y Division, the Bovey teams struggled to get to grips with the artificial surface at Ipplepen, losing on both rinks to go down by eight points to nil. K Isaaks, P Cridge, A Franklin 7-25; D Wraighte, S Parry, K Breame 16-30. In their MDL match at Dawlish, Bovey were well beaten on all four rinks, losing overall by 14 points to nil.
Bovey ladies were in action at Ipplepen in the Ladies' Triples Challenge and found the carpet more to their liking than the men had, gaining six points to their opponents' two. L Brothwood, L Cridge, R Young 17-20; J Ellis, D Bailey, S Breame 17-12. In the 4-3-2-1 competition Bovey played hosts to Marina and, despite losing the pairs, triples and rinks, a 29-8 win in the singles resulted in Bovey winning by 72 shots to 67 overall and progressing to the next round at Chudleigh. A shortened two-rink friendly at Newton Abbot was won by Bovey by 22 shots to 16.
A mixed home friendly against Babbacombe resulted in Bovey recording a draw and three narrow losses by just eight shots overall. L Fullbrook, L Cridge, J Ridgewell, C Shorland 16-16; J Ellis, P Cridge, T Smith, S Breame 14-16; A Chew, J Fullbrook, D Cosway, P Joy 16-19; J Chew, T Langdon, R Young, K Breame 15-18. In another mixed friendly at Abbrook Park, Bovey went down by 3 rinks to one.
In county competition, Andy Walding and Keith Lockett had reached the section final of the men's Over 70s Pairs and played Jeff Sharland and Kevin Taylor of Abbrook Park. A close game which Andy and Keith had led for much of the way hinged on a swing of six shots on the penultimate end. With the Bovey pair leading by two shots in the match and holding two on the end, Kevin took the jack through to the back with an unbelievable last bowl to record a four! The result was a win by Jeff and Kevin by 16 shots to 13 - good luck to them at the section winners' stage. Andy was also involved in the Over 60s Men's Singles playing Terry Ash at home. After building an early lead of 11 shots to 3, Andy then lost 10 of the last 11 ends with Terry winning by 22 shots to 14.
